The project that we would be doing is to design a bioreactor that applies mechanical force on cells. This project is offered by Prof Liao Kin.
Short write-up on the project:
Mesenchymal stem cells or human bone marrow stromal stem cells are defined as pluripotent progenitor cells with the ability to generate cartilage, bone, muscle, tendon, ligament and fat. These primitive progenitors exist postnatally and exhibit stem cell characteristics, namely low incidence and extensive renewal potential. When mechanical forces are applied on mesenchymal stem cells, the force would allow the MSCs to differentiate into chondrocytes, and our team is interested in designing a bioreactor that would apply force on the cells. This would allow the MSCs to differentiate into chondrocytes.
